Pharrel Williams and Bionic Yarn

Is there no end to this mans entrepreneurial endeavors, this time he is getting a piece of the sustainable design pie.
Pharrell has become part owner and investor in NY company Bionic Yarn, run by his partner Tyson Toussant, which is a green manufacturer of yarns made from recycled plastic bottles.
He has already begun using it in his clothing lines which include Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream.
" We were just looking at this new canvas that is amazing. Basically, the denim is still denim, the cotton is still cotton. The process to make the Bionic Yarn makes it extremely durable and gives it a really luxurious feel. "
" We'd like for it to be the next Gortex. I want it to be incorporated into everyday use and for people to see it all over the Wal-Marts and Targets of the world. So that people can see that if they have a perfectly great green alternative, why not choose that? "

Visit the website to see more about the fibre and all the scientific stuff that goes on in the process of making it.

More of that geo-knit style...

"My knitted installations are reflective of traditional craft concepts such as Fair Isle knitting, American samplers and Scandinavian pattern. While using illustration and illustrators tools such as graph paper, lined paper and even brick walls to create humourous knitted fabrics."

BIG Jewellery

Ceramicist Nicola Malkin creates large scale jewellery related scultural pieces and giant charms that have a girly tactile appeal. I particularly like the beaded necklace seen in AnOther Magazine. Her work reminds me of an old story book I had as a child called Wizards, Giants, Trolls and Magic (see last image).

Kate Jenkins Considered Stitches

Saw some of Kate Jenkins's work at the London Art Fair on Sunday 17th that stood out among the endless rows of traditional artist mediums, she has a humourous and charming way with the crochet hook. This is the blurb...

"Cardigan is the vision of Kate Jenkins and was set up in 2003 to fulfil her philosophy that anything can be created from yarn as long as it is made with love.
Based in Brighton, Kate's background is in fashion, designing for prestigious labels like Donna Karan, Sonia Rykiel and Missoni.
Using her talent for design, an artist's eye for colour and a witty imagination, Kate has developed the Cardigan label to create a truly unique collection.
Now, as well fabulous fashion, beautiful accessories and greetings cards, we have a gallery of original, collectible art."

WORK: In Progess - Triangular Patchwork Recycled Jumper

These are a couple of pages of bits I extruded from Vogue. I am currently working on a Miu Miu inspired triangle patchwork bag made from a shrunken Calvin Klein cardigan that used to be XL, until my genius sister borrowed it and tried to remove all traces of doing so by bunging it in the washing machine (fools mistake).
Its taking a redonculous amount of time to finish as anyone will understand if they have attempted triangular patchwork before, you will see it on the website by summer (I hope)...

HELLZ BELLZ

New York fashion label Hellz Bellz created by Lanie and Bam (no not me, different designer) in 2005. They are subtly sticking two fingers up at the false glamour young women are told to aspire to. And I quote...
"Hellz aims to reintroduce strength, individuality and sexual empowerment with a sassy balls to the walls approach. Kill that cutesey, helpless, damsel in distress noise; the bad girls, bookworms and divas alike are represented."
Good blog aswell...here

Just a bit more Paris jabber...

The Palais De Tokyo plastic bag is also tasty...

French Label - Le Mont St Michel

While in Paris I found this label in the Palais De Tokyo BlackBlock shop, which is so hot on design it makes me go silly with the bank card. I have trawled through so many google pages to try and find the fine knit jumpers I saw in there that had brilliant geometric patterns but no luck. I found some items on Urban Outfitters along with this description...

"Dating all the way back to 1913, French brand Le Mont St. Michel has been able to mix its tradition with a modern sensibility to produce alluring feminine clothes with edge. At the helm of the brand is Alexandre Milan who counts Britain as an influence for its culture of knitted fabrics, as well as Japan for its modernity and easy style. It is through these observations - places, eras, and genres of music that Alexandre Milan has created a brand whose look embodies both its traditional background and French style in a modern way."

And found out the range I was looking for is actually a collaboration with Das Pop, amazing, these are some of the press images:

On what was the biggest trek of my life, I wondered around Paris for two days absorbing the culture like a spongy magnet, found lots of geometric patterns and shapes. Mini-Vid: Chasing La Tour Eiffel

This is a very rough edit of a short video I am working on, needs a lot of tweaking but I though I would post this version before too much time passes while I work on it. Enjoy.
